Who we are

Rolling is a teleprompter app for iPhone, made by Typedream LLP ("we"). This page covers the Rolling app and this website, userolling.com.

Your videos stay on your iPhone

In short

We never receive your videos. You decide where copies go.

Your videos. The camera and microphone record each take into the app's storage on your iPhone. We never receive your videos. A copy leaves the app only when you save it to Photos or share it, and then it goes where you sent it.

Your scripts and reading settings stay on your iPhone too, unless you sign in and your scripts sync (below).

Your voice, if your version has Voice following. Speech is turned into text on the iPhone, only to keep your place in the script. It is not sent anywhere.

Your iPhone's own backup may include the app's files, as it does for every app. That backup is between you and Apple.

What leaves, and why

In short

Only what a feature you use needs: your sign-in, synced scripts, usage counts, screen recordings and crash reports you can turn off, ad measurement you choose, purchase records, and script text when you ask for reading cues.

Each item below happens only for the reason given. Some are still being built; this page describes them before they ship so nothing arrives unannounced.

If you sign in with Apple (optional)

You can use Rolling without an account. If you sign in, Apple gives us a code for your Apple ID that only apps from our company receive. We do not ask Apple for your name or email. We create an account ID, keep a sign-in session, and store a token from Apple, encrypted, so we can end the link with Apple when you delete your account.

Your scripts, when you are signed in

When you are signed in, your scripts and the count of free scripts you have used are stored in our database, so they come back on a new iPhone or after a reinstall. Only your account can read them.

Usage counts

The app sends short records of what happens, such as a screen opening or a take finishing, with details of the device: the app and iOS version, the type of iPhone, its language and time zone. The usage service can also work out a rough location, such as your country, from your internet address. They never contain your script text, your words, sound, video or file names. We use them to find what is broken or confusing.

They are on by default, and you can turn them off in the app's Settings. In the EU, the EEA, the UK and Switzerland the app asks first, and sends nothing until you agree. If you sign in, these records are linked to your account ID, never to your Apple ID or email.

Screen recordings

The usage service can also record how the app's screens look and change as you use them, so we can see where people get stuck. Before a recording leaves your iPhone, your face, the camera view, your videos, your account name and email, and everything you wrote (scripts, titles, take names) are blanked out. Recordings follow the same switch as usage counts.

Crash reports

If the app crashes or hits an error, it sends a report to our crash service: where in the code it happened, the type of iPhone, the iOS and app version, and which screen was open. Reports never contain your words, videos, file names or email. They follow the same switch as usage counts.

Ad measurement, if you allow it

We may buy ads for Rolling, and we want to know which ones bring people to the app. After your first saved take, Apple asks whether Rolling may track your activity across other companies' apps and websites. The app works the same whichever you answer.

Either way, a measurement service (Tenjin) learns that the app was installed and when four things first happen: the first launch, your first saved take, your first export and a Lifetime purchase. It also gets an ID that only identifies the app on your iPhone, and Apple's note of whether an Apple Ads ad led to the install. If you tap Allow, it also gets your iPhone's advertising ID, and the purchase service sends it the purchase with that ID. The ad networks we buy from then learn which of their ads led to installs and purchases. If you do not allow it, they get only Apple's combined counts, which do not identify you. Your videos, scripts and words are never part of it.

You can change your answer at any time in the iPhone's Settings, under Privacy & Security, then Tracking. Turning off usage counts in the app also stops ad measurement.

Buying Lifetime

Apple takes the payment. We never see your card or payment details. A purchase service keeps a record of the purchase so the app can check it and restore it on another iPhone. That record is tied to your account ID, or to an ID the app makes if you are not signed in. Purchase, refund and restore events also reach our usage counts from that service, and the measurement service described above.

Add reading cues

When you tap Add reading cues, the text of that script goes to our server, which sends it to an AI model to suggest where to pause and what to stress. We send it through a route set to keep no copy of the text, and our server does not store it. We keep only a count of how often you use the feature, for the fair use limit in our Terms.

Backing up takes to iCloud (optional)

If you turn on backup, your takes are copied to your own private iCloud storage. Apple holds them under your Apple ID; we cannot see them. Turning backup off lets you remove them from iCloud.

Eight services help run Rolling

In short

Each one handles only the part named in this table.

These companies process data only to run the parts named here.

ServiceWhat it does for RollingWhat it handles
AppleSign in with Apple, payments, refunds, iCloud backupYour Apple ID sign-in, payment, your iCloud files
SupabaseAccounts, script sync and the server for Add reading cues (United States)Account ID, Apple's sign-in code for our company, encrypted Apple token, synced scripts

CloudflareServing this website and counting its visitsStandard request data, such as IP address; page views and page speed, with no cookies

You can turn each part off

  • Use Rolling without signing in.
  • Turn usage counts off in the app's Settings. That also stops screen recordings, crash reports and ad measurement.
  • Answer "Ask App Not to Track" to Apple's question, or change it later in the iPhone's Settings, under Privacy & Security, then Tracking.
  • Leave iCloud backup off, or turn it off later.
  • Allow or remove camera, microphone, speech and Photos access in the iPhone's Settings. Recording needs the camera and microphone; nothing else does.
  • Do not use Add reading cues; you can type your own cues instead.

We keep data only while you need it

Account data and synced scripts: until you delete your account. After that, copies left in our database backups are removed as those backups expire. Usage records, screen recordings, crash reports and ad-measurement records: for a limited period, after which they are deleted. Script text sent for reading cues: not stored.

You can delete all of it

In short

Delete your account in the app and we delete what we hold. Delete the app and what is on your iPhone goes with it.

Your account. Delete it in the app's account settings. That deletes your account and synced scripts, ends the link with Apple, and deletes the usage records and screen recordings tied to your account. We also ask the measurement service to delete what it holds for your iPhone.

What is on your iPhone. Delete a take or script in the app, or delete the app. Deleting the app removes the takes and scripts stored in it. Copies you saved to Photos, shared, or backed up to iCloud stay where they are until you remove them.

How we protect it

Data that leaves your iPhone travels encrypted. Our database lets each account read only its own scripts, and Apple's sign-in token is stored encrypted. Only the people who run Rolling can reach our systems, and only to keep them working.

No selling, no ads in the app

We do not sell your data, and Rolling shows no ads. If you allow tracking, the ad networks we buy ads from learn which of their ads led to your install and purchase, as described above. Nothing else is shared for advertising.

If something goes wrong

If your data is ever exposed, we will tell you, and the authorities the law requires, as soon as we know what happened and what it means for you.

You can ask for your data

Depending on where you live, you can ask us for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it. Write to us (below) and we will answer. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.

California residents

If you live in California, you have the right to know what we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to opt out of its sale or sharing. We do not sell personal information. If you allow tracking, the ad measurement described above may count as "sharing" under California law. To opt out, answer "Ask App Not to Track" to Apple's question, change it in the iPhone's Settings, or turn off usage counts in the app. Using these rights never changes how the app treats you.

This website counts visits without cookies

In short

We see how many pages are viewed and how fast they load. No cookies, and nothing is stored in your browser.

Cloudflare serves userolling.com and handles the usual request data, such as your IP address, to deliver and protect the site.

Cloudflare also adds its Web Analytics script to each page. The script counts page views and measures how fast the page loads, then sends that to Cloudflare. It sets no cookies and stores nothing in your browser. Cloudflare says Web Analytics does not collect or use visitors' personal data, and that it keeps the detailed records for 7 days before keeping only a sample.

Text you paste into the script timer stays in your browser. The timer does its sums on the page and sends nothing.

Not for children under 13

Rolling is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

Changes come here first

When the app changes what it does with data, we update this page and its date first. If a change matters, the app will tell you.
